TL DR: Drag and drop iPhoto library file to external drive and always import to that library. Click the Eject icon next to the external drive. I just had to do the same thing as I ran out of space on my internal drive. When you go to import new photos, open iPhoto as described before, you can import photos to the library on your external drive. ![]() Make SURE it has been transferred before deleting the library on the internal drive or you take the risk of deleting your entire library. Once you've verified that it has been transferred and is functioning properly from your external drive, if you need to, then you can erase the one on your internal drive. When you open it, it will look identical to the one you have on your internal drive. It will open the library you just transferred. Select the iPhoto library on your external drive (make sure you're not opening the default one on your hard drive). Once transferred, open iPhoto while holding down the option key.
